Since meeting in school and performing under the moniker Tom and Jerry, borrowed from the popular cartoon, the duo of Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel got their musical start by releasing a recording called 'Hey, Schoolgirl', which went on to sell more than 150,000 copies.
Changing their performance name to Simon & Garfunkel and releasing their first notable single 'The Sound of Silence' in 1965, the men were met with an overwhelming response by rock, folk, and pop fans alike, and saw them become one of the prominent voices of the '60s.
1966 was a big year for the pair. They released three albums and four singles which all charted highly in the US charts, and subsequently shot the band to international recognition.
Perhaps one of their most famous tunes, 'Mrs Robinson' was featured heavily as part of the film The Graduate, starring Dustin Hoffman, in 1967. Simon & Garfunkel penned the whole soundtrack, which just shot them further into the spotlight, giving them a number one spot on the charts.
Many arguments have ensued over which album or single of the duo has been their most popular, but there's no doubt that 1970's 'Bridge Over Troubled Water' was one of their most instantly recognisable, even taking out Song of the Year at the Grammy Awards in the US. The album of the same name topped the charts in the US and Australia, and sold more than 13 million copies.
No one knows exactly why the pair decided to pursue their solo careers at that particular time; their own solo work was a relatively far cry from their trademark folk sound, though their careers enjoyed some success. It wasn't until 1981 that the pair reunited to play in New York; in the 1990s a series of dates brought them together again. Due to the demand of fans worldwide, 2008 saw plans for another tour and the pair subsequently reunited once again, proving that popular music can never really be silenced.
