Talons
Talons are a three-piece band hailing from Sydney, and have played a punishing number of gigs since forming in 2006. They have shared stages with the likes of Further, The Mint Chicks, Die! Die! Die!, Regular John and The Stabs, featured at the MySydney Riot festival and made the final of the 2007 Hopetoun Incentive band competition. The band recorded the tracks on their debut EP Ducats - released November, 2007 - soon after forming. You won't see Talons swigging Jack Daniels on stage and aping AC/DC riffs, nor will you catch them playing acoustic sets at sustainable-energy festivals. Instead, Talons invoke a period when Aussie music was dangerous, credible and stylish. Witnessing Talons play live is like walking into the firing line of a tommy gun. The air feels spiked with tension and excitement - these wiry, geeky-looking kids seem more intimidating than any muscle-bound hardcore band might strive to be. For a three-piece they make a hell of a racket, but it's a considered approach to noise-making. Everything sits in its own place, whether it's Christian's glass-shattering guitar attack and frantic vocals, Ben's tribal drum bombast or Mich's thundering and ominous bass lines. The sum of their very different parts is a sound that is unarguably their own. There's a sizeable buzz around them, and rightly so, with the band possessing an international appeal and inherent sense of style and credibility, formed from hours spent on stages and in rehearsal rooms well away from the influence or expectations of the music industry.
