Formed in Melbourne in 1994, Something For Kate's founding members were Paul Dempsey (vocals, guitar), Clint Hyndman (drums) and Julian Carroll (bass).
Together in 1995 they recorded a seven-track demo, which was later released through Murmur Records as the EP The Answer to Both Your Question in 1996. The three track single Dean Martin was released the same year.
While recording their first album, another EP, Intermission was circulated. Something For Kate's debut album Elsewhere For Eight Minutes was released in 1997 and featured popular songs such as Captain (Million miles an hour) and Working Against Me. Shortly after the release, bass player Julian Carroll left the band and was replaced by Toby Ralph who accompanied the band on tour but then replaced by bassist Stephanie Ashworth, who would co-produce the bands next album Beautiful Sharks (1999). Four singles from the new album quickly gained the band a dedicated following.
In 2000, the debut EP was re-released along with a selection of 12 Something For Kate music videos. Echolalia, produced by Trina Shoemaker (Queens of the Stone Age, REM, Whiskeytown, Sheryl Crowe) arrived in June of 2001 and was well received in the Australian music community, with four singles coming from the album and also a DVD release documenting the making of the record.
Two years later they released another record, The Official Fiction, which was also released in Europe and the US. Something For Kate went on to tour widely, with appearances at Homebake and the Big Day Out, gaining the support slot for the Australian leg of David Bowie's Reality Tour, and touring Europe. A double album of B-sides, titled Phantom Limbs was released in 2004. 2006 saw the release of Desert Lights, the band's fifth studio album.
