Originally emerging from the Los Angeles punk scene in the early 1980s, the Red Hot Chili Peppers have gone on to take their place as one of the biggest bands in the world. Through their nine albums the group has brought together a wealth of diverse genres, including funk, punk, rock and psychedelia, to create a sound that is unmistakably their own and which countless other bands have tried to imitate.
Though the band has gone through various roster changes through its life, the most stable and commercially successful line-up includes founding members vocalist Anthony Kiedis and bass player Michael "Flea" Balzary, along with guitarist John Frusciante and drummer Chad Smith.
Following a succession of progressively more successful albums, the band achieved their major breakthrough with their fourth album, Mother's Milk. This was followed on with Blood Sugar Sex Magik, an album that has, to date, sold in excess of 12 million copies worldwide. In 2007, a public poll conducted by the ABC placed Blood Sugar Sex Magik as Australia's seventh favourite album.
After the release of One Hot Minute, an album seen as a failure due to it selling less than half the amount of it predecessor, the group disappeared from view for several years. The band made their "comeback" with 1999's Californication.
Subsequent albums, 2002's By the Way and 2006's double album Stadium Arcadium have cemented the Red Hot Chili Peppers' place in rock's superleague.
