The band that would become The Human League formed in Sheffield, England comprising two computer operators, Ian Craig Marsh and Martyn Ware. The pair invested in synthesizers to record various demo tapes and got serious as a band when they recruited school friend Phillip Oakey and took their current moniker in October, 1977.
Indie label Fast Product released the band's debut single, 'Being Boiled', in 1978. The band were soon playing prominent support slots, including a European tour with Iggy Pop, and came under the interest of major labels, signing to Virgin for their debut album Reproduction. Pressures mounted within the band as it dealt with the expectations of the record company when their potential never quite turned into popularity.
After the release of the band's second album Travelogue, things reached a breaking point. Marsh and Ware quit the group leaving Oakey and the technologically proficient but musically inexperienced Adrian Wright with not only the name The Human League but also a European tour to complete. Two schoolgirls from a local nightspot were recruited as singers and a local musician were added to complete the new Human League line-up.
The assistance of producer Martin Rushent contributed to a string of successful singles leading to the band's breakthrough third album Dare, which topped charts and saw the band tour the globe on the back of tracks such as the number one hit 'Don't You Want Me'. While the band would never recapture the same level of popular success with future album releases, they enjoyed some minor hit singles throughout the '80s. Phil Oakey landed a worldwide smash hit with the single 'Together in Electric Dreams', stemming from his collaboration with synth pioneer Giorgio Moroder.
The band's lustre with the record-buying public dimmed through the '90s, although time has treated the band kindly. The Human League is again revered in music circles and has been successfully touring and recording again since 2001.
