Hadouken!
Named after a special move in the video game Street Fighter, Hadouken! hail from Leeds, England. Taking their lead from contemporaries such as The Streets and The Klaxons, the group produces music which combines the sounds of grime, electronic and nu rave spliced with sounds of oldskool video games. In late 2006, two Leeds University students James Smith and Daniel 'Pilau' Rice formed the record label Surface Noise Records and shortly after began demoing tracks under the name Hadouken! The group, which also features Alice Spooner, Chris Purcell and Nick Rice, received their big break when Mike Skinner of The Streets aired the track 'That Boy That Girl' on BBC Radio 1. In May of that year, they released the song as a double-A side single with the track 'Tuning In' on Surface Noise Records. The singles caught the attention of UK's premiere music bible NME and Hadouken! quickly soared to popularity. The next single 'Liquid Lives' featured on the group's Kitsune Music USB-only mixtape Not Here to Please You. The band spent most of 2007 touring the UK and playing the summer festival circuit, appearing at the Reading and Leeds festivals as well as Summer Sonic in Osaka, Japan. The release of their debut album Music for an Accelerated Culture on new major label Atlantic Records was preceded by the single 'Get Smashed Gate Crash'. The album also spawned the digital-only single 'Leap of Faith'.
