Crystal Castles
A chance meeting while performing community service and an impassioned conversation about the lack of originality in today's music scene created a surprising result that comes in the form of the electro/thrash/garage/ band we know as Crystal Castles. Perhaps aptly named after the children's cartoon character She-Ra's fortress in the sky (which according to television commercials "is the source of all power"), their raw, highly energetic, epileptic performances have captivated a new generation of noise lovers worldwide.
Crystal Castles first began as a side project by multi-instrumentalist and producer Ethan Kath in December, 2003. In 2005 the band's unique sound came to fruition with the introduction of Alice Glass and her signature vocals. The duo's first single came about from a mic test by Glass during one of the group's recording sessions. The track that was later titled 'Alice Practice' was posted onto MySpace, and as luck would have it, the big cheeses from the record label world heard the song and offered the duo a record deal. Their "accidental" single was re-released as a limited-edition 7" in 2006 and sold out in three days.
From there the journey of Crystal Castles has been much like the cartoon from which they pulled their inspiration from: a high-scaling psychedelic explosion of twists and turns. 2007 saw the band tour relentlessly with big names such as The Presets and Metric, while in 2008 they toured with Nine Inch Nails and released their self-titled debut album. Kath is also well recognised as a master of the remix, mixing for such artists as Bloc Party, Klaxons and Hunting for Witches to name a few.
