Tired of being sexy? So is this Brazilian five-piece - or so their name suggests when directly translated from their native Portuguese tongue. Cansei de Ser Sexy, or CSS as they're more commonly known, named themselves after a Beyonce Knowles quote, when she famously proclaimed that she was "tired of being sexy"; CSS, their tongues planted firmly in their cheeks, took the idea from Hollywood and trashed it up, not only with their name but in a number of their songs. The 2009 line-up, which has seen a few changes since their 2003 inception, is fronted by the lively Lovefoxxx, and helped along by her band-mates Ana, Carolina, Luiza Sa and sole male Adriano, to create their infectious electro tunes that are helped along by catchy pop hooks and ridiculous lyrics. Their upbeat and energetic stage show, which sees more jumping about than a cheerleading convention, is a raucous fit of lights, colour and dancing. Armed with English as a second language, CSS found their fame on the Internet. Their popularity grew and saw them become the first ever Brazilian band to be signed to the label Sub Pop. It was their breakthrough single, 'Music is my Hot Hot Sex' from their self-titled album released in 2006, which thrust the band into the public spotlight after being used in an Apple commercial. The tune has since become one of the band's anthems, and is in high demand at their live performances. The New York Times said of their 2006 album: "Their music is a gleeful throwback to early-1980s art-school pop" - an accurate description that is complemented by their fashion sense that appears to have come from an '80s op-shop and combined with lashings of fluoro athletic threads. Fast forward through a bunch of world touring and festival appearances, and you have Donkey, their 2008 record that has further cemented their popularity worldwide. There's no mistaking it, Cansei de Ser Sexy are an unashamed pop-music machine that has a gritty electro-punk edge and a foul mouth - and they're loving it.
