AC/DC first played in the Chequers club in Sydney on New Years Eve 1973, but soon relocated to Melbourne and recruited singer Bon Scott, one time chauffer and roadie for the band. The band's widespread following from live gigs helped their first two albums, 1974's High Voltage and 1975's TNT, both reach number one in Australia.
AC/DC took England by storm in 1976; their weekly residency at London's Marquee Club shattered attendance records and saw them signed to Atlantic Records worldwide. Let There Be Rock topped the charts across Europe, got them a foothold into America and spawned their best known single ('It's A Long Way to the Top'). Tragedy struck the band in February 1980, when Bon Scott died choking on his own vomit while sleeping off a big night in a car in London.
The band soldiered on. New singer Brian Johnson was discovered after a fan sent a tape of his band Geordie to AC/DC's management. The next album, Back in Black, was the band's zenith, selling more than 40 million copies worldwide. The momentum continued with For Those About to Rock, We Salute You, being the first hard rock album to reach number one on the US charts.
The band was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 1988. A new century saw a new AC/DC album, Stiff Upper Lip, hit top ten charts in eleven countries around the world. The band were inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame in 2003 and are credited as the fifth highest selling band in the US.
